Plasma cutting

 Type of plasma metal working, where plasma jet is used in the capacity of cutting tool.

 Electrical arc is ignited between the electrode and the nozzle of device, or between the electrode and the metal being cut. Gas is supplied into nozzle under a pressure of several atmospheres, it’s converted by electric arc into plasma jet with a temperature from 5,000 to 30,000 degrees and a speed from 500 to 1500 m / s. The thickness of the metal may be up to 200 mm. Initial arc striking is carried out by high-voltage pulse or a short circuit between the nozzle and the metal being cut. The nozzles are cooled by flow of gas (air cooling) or liquid cooling.

The advantages of plasma cutting:

  • any metals can be handled (ferrous, non-ferrous, refractory alloys and so on)
  • speed of cutting higher than the speed of flame cutting
  • small and local heating eliminate its thermal deformation
  • high quality of the cut surface
  • safety of process
  • difficult curly tenderloin
  • no restrictions of the geometric form.
